VISITING TEACHING ASSOCIATE—JAPANESE

University Laboratory High School, IL

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for the position of Visiting Teaching Associate – Japanese at the University Laboratory High School, a 5-year, selective admissions public school with about 330 students. This is an academic staff, 9-month appointment for the 2024–2025 school year. The successful applicant will teach Japanese levels 1—4. Salary is commensurate with degree and experience. This position would begin August 2024 after the successful completion of a fingerprint criminal background check for employment.

Responsibilities: Teach four levels of Japanese, namely Japanese I—Japanese IV, to academically talented 8th grade through 12th grade students, take part in faculty meetings, and participate in other duties as outlined in the faculty handbook.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Japanese, Teaching of Japanese, or relevant field
  • Evidence of effective and creative teaching experience
  • Advanced oral and written proficiency in Japanese

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Japanese or equivalent training in Japanese
  • Native or near-native oral proficiency in Japanese
  • High-school level teaching experience in the United States
  • Experience in developing instructional materials and innovative curricula
  • Knowledge of Japanese culture and literature
  • Excellent communication skillsin English
  • Professional Educator License (PEL) in the state of Illinois, or eligible for one
  • Involvement in professional organizations and experience with outreach activities
  • Technological literacy
