The recent exponential growth of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to have a profound impact on education. In this two-part webinar, we explored the role of AI tools in the Japanese classroom, with a particular focus on ChatGPT.

Workshop Leader: Y.-H. Tohsaku (University of California, San Diego). Facilitator: Yoshiko Saito-Abbott, AATJ Professional Development Director (California State University, Monterey Bay)

These sessions provided Japanese language teachers with a comprehensive understanding of AI tools and their potential in the classroom. We also discussed the precautions needed to address associated risks, such as personal information leakages and copyright infringement, and how to integrate generative AI into self-study, tutoring, and classroom and group activities to enhance learning.

A future workshop will provide hands-on practice in using AI to develop teaching materials and develop rules and procedures for using it in the classroom.
