Japanese Language Instructor

The Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) in Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, seeks a full-time Instructor for its residential Japanese language program. This 12-month, fixed-term position begins 16 August 2017, and is renewable contingent upon funding and performance. Salary is commensurate with qualifications.

Position Description 
Responsibilities of this position include up to 20 hours per week of collegiate classroom teaching, holding office hours for student advising and tutoring, and developing curriculum, classroom activities and student learning outcome assessment tools, as well as full participation in JCMU’s numerous outreach events and intercultural student engagement initiatives. Instructors are expected to engage in the academic community and participate in ongoing professional development.

Qualified candidates must have a Master’s degree in Japanese pedagogy, linguistics, foreign language teaching or related field; native of near-native fluency in both Japanese and English; experience in teaching English-speaking college students; and familiarity with proficiency-oriented instruction and evaluation, communicative language teaching, technology-assisted learning methodologies, and the ACTFL scale.

Three years of experience in multi-level Japanese language teaching is preferred. The successful candidate will bring innovative ideas to a growing study abroad program that teaches Japanese language learners from the United States and around the world, and from beginning to advanced-level students.
