Visiting Assistant Professor of Japanese Studies

The Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at the College of William & Mary invites applications for a one year, non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Professor position in Japanese Studies that will begin August 10, 2017. Teaching load will be six courses (3-3). Primary responsibilities will include teaching a Japanese language class and several topics courses, including one or more in the successful candidate’s specialization and one to be cross-listed with an interdisciplinary program (i.e. Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, or Film and Media Studies).

Minimum Qualifications: A Master’s degree with A.B.D. status is required at the time of appointment, August 10, 2017. (M.A. will allow the title of Visiting Instructor.)The candidate must have demonstrable experience in teaching content and language courses at the college level. The candidate must possess native or near-native fluency in both Japanese and English.

Preferred: A PhD is preferred in Japanese Studies or other Japan-related field at the time of appointment begins August 10, 2017. (Ph.D. will allow the title of Visiting Assistant Professor.)

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the College of William & Mary is the oldest program in modern languages in the United States. The department traces its beginning to the establishment of a professorship in modern languages at the College of William & Mary in a curriculum reform instituted by Thomas Jefferson in 1779. Today that single professorship has grown to nearly 50 faculty members offering courses in eight languages, literatures and cultures. Faculty members of every rank are engaged in teaching at all levels, in study abroad programs, in a variety of research activities, and in service to the College, the community and the profession.​
