Eiko Ushida

Eiko Ushida is a Lecturer of Japanese at Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies (IR/PS) at the University of California, San Diego. She received her Ph.D. in Second Language Acquisition from Carnegie Mellon University in 2003. She has taught all levels of Japanese language and culture courses as well as content-based courses in Australia and the U.S. Since 2008 she has been president of Teachers of Japanese in Southern California (TJSC), being responsible for organizing workshops and publishing newsletters for Japanese teachers in the Southern California region. She has been a key developer of AATJ’s JOINT (Japanese Online Instruction Network for Teachers) program, and taught the first JOINT course, “Content-Based Instruction for Advanced Japanese” twice in 2008-2009. She is currently serving as a JOINT advisor, and trains facilitators who develop and teach other JOINT courses. Her research interests include online education, technology-enhanced language teaching and learning, Japanese pedagogy, teacher education and professional development, and Japanese for Special Purposes. She has published her work in various journals including Australian Journal of Applied Linguistics, CALICO Journal, Computer Assisted Language Learning, Japanese Language and Literature, Japanese-Language Education around the Globe, and Nihongokyooiku.
