Kimi Kondo-Brown

Kimi Kondo-Brown is Associate Professor of Japanese and Interim Associate Dean in the College of Languages, Linguistics, and Literature at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. For the last 22 years, she has taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, from introductory Japanese language courses to advanced Japanese courses to graduate seminar courses on pedagogy and research methodology. She has also been involved in various kinds of local and national assessment and evaluation projects. Her forthcoming book (to be published in February 2011 by Kuroshio Publishers) summarizes these projects and provides theoretical foundations and practical assessment tools for Japanese language teachers. She has been an active researcher in the field, published widely, and given numerous local, national, international presentations and workshops. In addition to numerous book chapters and articles on language learning, teaching, and testing in journals such as Modern Language Journal, Language Learning, Language Testing, Foreign Language Annals, and Japanese Language & Literature, she has published three edited books: Teaching Chinese, Japanese and Korean Heritage Language Students: Curriculum Needs, Materials, and Assessment (with JD Brown, Taylor & Francis, 2008), Heritage Language Development (John Benjamins, 2006), and Perspectives on teaching connected speech (with JD Brown, National Foreign Language Resource Center, 2006). She is a certified ACTFL OPI tester in Japanese.
