Resident Director, Intensive Japanese Language and Area Studies, Osaka, Japan
Description:
The Resident Director (RD) is responsible for managing the CET Japanese Language and Area Studies programs, which operate during the fall, spring and summer terms. The RD reports to the Japan Program Manager based in Washington, D.C. and works with a head teacher, part-time assistant, and staff of OGU’s International Center. Excellent communication and team work skills are essential.
General responsibilities include coordinating all activities, student meals, housing, Japanese roommate selection, and activities. The RD designs and directs each term's orientation sessions. He/she must meet frequently with CET's students (both informally and during regular office hours) to evaluate their goals, progress and adjustment. The RD is responsible for the programs' operating budgets and financial reports.
Additionally, the RD must work together with the head Japanese language teacher to ensure the quality of the language lessons, assist in developing creative means of achieving language goals, and provide feedback.
Candidates are advised that this is a time-consuming, challenging position. We therefore discourage those interested in pursuing their own research projects in Osaka from applying. CET is seeking a candidate willing to commit to two years in Japan.

American Councils for International Education (ACTR/ACCELS)
Summer Overseas Resident Directors in Japan
American Councils is currently seeking qualified Resident Directors to work overseas on summer programs ranging from five to eight weeks in length. Programs are designed for university undergraduate and graduate students and are focused on foreign language acquisition. Two Resident Directors are being sought for Japan. Anticipated employment dates: Early June to mid August 2010 (exact appointment dates will vary according to program specifics).
Resident Directors represent American Councils in their actions and words during the tenure of their appointment. They must be available to program participants on a daily basis; observe participant classes at the host university; meet regularly with teachers, administrators, and participants; and arrange group travel and cultural programs. Resident Directors must be available to participants during any emergencies that arise and must communicate regularly with the American Councils program staff in Washington, DC. Responsibilities include logistics for the group while overseas, communications, counseling of individual students when needed, and troubleshooting. Resident Directors oversee a program budget, and are responsible for proper documentation of program expenditures and timely completion of a budget report at the end of the month and end of the program. Prior to departure, all Resident Directors must attend American Councils orientation programs for both staff and participants. Resident Directors are required to travel with their respective participant groups at the beginning of their programs and return to Washington, DC, with the group at the end of the program. Resident Directors report to the DC-based Program Manager.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or higher in language of host country or area studies or equivalent;
• Advanced language skills -- written and oral (minimum 2/2+ on ACTFL scale) in the relevant target language;
• Study, work, or extensive travel experience in host country;
• Experience overseeing and guiding groups;
• Demonstrated skills in academic and personal counseling; and
• Demonstrated skills in general financial accountability.

C.V. Starr-Middlebury College School in Japan
Director
Middlebury College seeks an energetic and innovative person to serve as Director of Middlebury’s C.V. Starr-Middlebury School in Japan (Tokyo), which will be located at International Christian University (ICU).
The Director will administer, implement, and develop Middlebury’s academic program in Japan at International Christian University (ICU), playing a central role in launching the new school. The School in Japan opens in fall 2010, and the preferred start date for the Director will be July 1, 2010. The initial contract will be for three years (until June 2013), with the possibility of renewal.
Candidates should have a Ph.D. in Japanese language, linguistics, literature, or area studies (or a related field), native or near-native language competency in both Japanese and English, as well as knowledge of both the Japanese and U.S. academic systems. Administrative and study abroad experience strongly preferred. Candidates with relevant teaching experience, knowledge of language pedagogy, and a demonstrated interest in second-language acquisition in the U.S. and Japan, as well as strong interpersonal skills and leadership ability, will receive the strongest consideration. The successful candidate will spend the academic year in residence in Tokyo, where s/he will be responsible for overseeing approximately 10-20 students.

East Asian Studies Project Coordinator
The University of Notre Dame’s Center for Asian Studies (CAS) and Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures (CSLC) invite applications for a project coordinator who works in a discipline emphasizing Chinese,
Japanese, and/or Korean area studies from a humanities or educational perspective to fill the 2-year grant-funded
position of East Asian Studies (EAS) project coordinator. We are searching for a project coordinator with
competence in one or more of these cultures and languages, who also has experience with project coordination as
well as curricular and pedagogical development. A master’s degree in a related discipline and proficiency in an East
Asian language are required. Candidates may have, for example, an M.A. in Second Language Acquisition, Applied
Linguistics, East Asian Area Studies, Foreign Language, or Foreign Language Education with expertise in Chinese,
Japanese, and/or Korean. ABDs are encouraged to apply.
The EAS coordinator’s primary responsibility will be to help coordinate key components of the project "A New
Paradigm for Asian Studies at ND: Innovation, Integration, and Distinction," funded by the Undergraduate
International Studies and Foreign Language (UISFL) program of the US Department of Education. The coordinator
will assist the project co-directors, faculty steering committee, and participating units during the project's
implementation. This position has the potential to make a significant impact on the growing Asian Studies programs
at the University, and an ongoing appointment may be considered at the end of the initial two-year term.
The EAS project coordinator will work with CAS and the CSLC, the Department of East Asian Languages and
Cultures, the Provost's Office on Asia Initiatives, the Kellogg Institute for International Studies, and the College of
Arts & Letters, as well as external consultants, to assist in the development and coordination of an integrated
curriculum, co-curricular programming, and language learning resources. A successful candidate would bring Asia-specific
knowledge to new CSLC programming and assessment initiatives and help establish an integrated curriculum that will endure beyond the grant period. S/he will assist the College’s pedagogy/assessment specialist in developing and implementing program-level assessment initiatives in Asian languages, work with the director of the CSLC to ensure that Asian language students are offered appropriate co-curricular programming, as well as assist in the identification of Asia-specific materials, including print and electronic resources, for the CSLC, the University library, and the Kellogg Institute’s outreach program.
The successful candidate will be an energetic self-starter with a combination of academic experience and program
coordination, project management, or administrative experience, preferably in a university setting. S/he will have
demonstrated the ability to take initiative, exercise independent judgment, handle multiple tasks and deadlines, and
work collaboratively and effectively with different constituencies. Outstanding organizational and leadership skills
are essential. Excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong cross-cultural and interpersonal
communication skills are a must. The ideal candidate is an individual who exceeds the minimum qualifications and
brings a combination of exceptional talent, skills, training, and experience to this important position.
Salary range: $35,000–$40,000, depending on qualifications and experience, for a 10-month full-time appointment.

Asian Studies is flourishing at Notre Dame, with approximately 30 courses related to Asia taught to around 600
students each semester. The Center for Asian Studies, founded in 1996, has a core faculty of 25 and over a dozen
other contributing members, and offers a supplementary major and a minor in Asian Studies. The Department of

Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies
Resident Director
The Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS) is seeking candidates for the position of Resident Director of its study abroad programs based on the campus of Doshisha University in Kyoto. The successful candidate will hold an academic appointment in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Columbia University. The position may be filled at any rank from Lecturer through full Professor. KCJS is a consortium of 14 universities administered by Columbia that offers academic year and summer programs. Working closely with the KCJS Governing Board, Columbia University, and Doshisha University, the Resident Director is responsible for the continued development and oversight of the academic programs, student affairs, and administrative and financial management. The Resident Director supervises a full-time administrative staff that assists in all areas of program management and teaches one course each semester during the academic year program. This is a five-year position, with the possibility of renewal, that begins on July 1, 2011. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in a Japan-related field and undergraduate teaching experience; language fluency in English and Japanese; Japanese cultural fluency; experience with American undergraduates at institutions similar to those in the KCJS; administrative experience; and ability to undertake international travel. Experience with overseas study programs preferred, but not required.
