One year position beginning fall 2010: The Modern Languages Department at Phillips Exeter Academy seeks a teacher of Japanese as a one year sabbatical replacement beginning fall 2010. Native or near-native mastery of the language, teaching experience, and the ability to teach all levels of language and literature (elementary to AP) are expected. Advanced degree preferred. Responsibilities include teaching four courses, dormitory service, coaching a sport and/or other student activity.

Portland (OR) Public Schools

Portland Public Schools (PPS) in Portland, Oregon, is currently accepting applications for a full-time Japanese Language/Immersion Teacher and Curriculum Specialist position at Grant High School beginning fall 2009. With an expanding program and a five year Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) grant from the U.S. Department of Education, PPS seeks a highly qualified, certified and experienced teacher who will teach several high-level Japanese language courses and possibly a content-based course in Japanese along with collaborating with the district's Immersion Education Coordinator, university partners, and fellow secondary-level Japanese immersion teachers to develop curriculum and materials, conduct professional development, and implement significant program improvements. Grant funding will provide for curriculum and materials, technology, and regular professional development opportunities.

Required Qualifications:

Experience working/teaching in K-12 Education
Curriculum development experience
Native or near native proficiency speaking, writing and reading in both English and Japanese
Strong ability to collaborate with a wide range of people
Excellent organizational and communication skills

Preferred:

Master's Degree in Japanese
Endorsement in content area and Secondary teaching
Excellent technology skills

Chesterton, IN
Japanese Teaching Position

The Duneland School Corporation in Chesterton, Indiana is looking for a teacher to teach middle school and high school Japanese.  Chesterton High School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school with approximately 160 students studying Japanese in four grades. The middle school classes will be new for the fall of 2009 and an expansion of the current program. This new teacher will teach middle school and a few classes at the high school, including small IB classes. The current high school teacher will continue teaching at the high school.

The Japanese program at Chesterton High School is in its fourteenth year. There is an active Japanese club and a competitive Japanese Olympiad/Japan Bowl team. The CHS teams won the National Japan Bowl three times and the state competitions eleven times over the past six years. Chesterton, Indiana, is at the southern tip of Lake Michigan and a little over an hour from Chicago.

Immersion Teaching Position

John Stanford International School is an innovative language immersion school where students learn half of the day in English and the other half of the day in Japanese or Spanish. We are currently looking for a .5 FTE Japanese immersion teacher (or 1.0 FTE if the teacher can teach the other half day in English) who will be teaching either kindergarten or first grade and who currently has or will be able to obtain a Washington State K-8 Teaching Certificate. In this position, the teacher will teach either kindergarten or first grade. (This position will increase to a 1.0 FTE Japanese immersion position for the 2010 - 2011 school year.)

Japanese immersion teachers at JSIS teach math, science and Japanese literacy completely in Japanese. Literacy and social studies are taught in English by English speaking teachers. Requirements for this certificated teaching position include: native or near-native Japanese speaking skills, the ability to design and implement lessons with both content and language objectives, skills in scaffolding language to support non-Japanese speaking students, the ability to collaborate with others, a positive approach to working with students and a love and appreciation of culture and global education.
