Assistant Professor of Japanese, Tenure-Track

University of North Texas
Full-time Lecturer in Japanese

Full-time position to begin September 1, 2010 (classes begin 8/26/10). This is a one-year appointment, with full benefits and possibility of renewal.

M.A. in Japanese or related field, native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English. Teaching experience in Japanese is also required, two years preferred.

Teaching load: Four undergraduate courses per semester. Participation in departmental activities and committees.

The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London invites applications for full time post as a Principal Lector in Japanese. The successful candidate will lead and support a team of lectors and senior lectors in the development, teaching and assessment of a range of Japanese courses; teach Japanese language to degree students at various levels; design and deliver course plans and materials; engage in subject, professional and pedagogy research in support of teaching.  The candidate will contribute to departmental activities and play a leading role in the running of the Japanese year abroad programme.

The Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Arkansas is accepting applications for the position of Full-Time Lecturer in Japanese. Formal appointment (to begin August 16, 2010) is contingent on budget approval..

Duties: To teach four classes per semester of Japanese language courses at all levels (elementary to advanced), with the possibility of additional teaching appointments in summer. The Lecturer is also expected to assist in curriculum development in the basic language component of the Japanese Program and in conducting the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (an international certification examination of Japanese language proficiency) on campus.

Qualifications: A Master’s degree (must be conferred) in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field; native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English; experience in teaching to English-speaking students; and a vibrant and outgoing teaching style. Applicants should have a Master's or Doctoral degree in Japanese language pedagogy, Japanese linguistics, TESOL, or other relevant areas; native or near-native proficiency in both Japanese and English; extensive experience in teaching to English-speaking students at the college level; and a vibrant teaching style. Candidates with experience in teaching more than one level, including third-year Japanese, are preferred. The successful candidate will teach some sections of 1st- and 2nd-year Japanese, but will primarily be responsible for teaching 3rd-year Japanese, with a curricular emphasis on reading and vocabulary/kanji knowledge.

Duties: To teach eight classes per year of Japanese language courses at all levels (elementary to advanced but with an emphasis on advanced). Pomona College
Japanese Language Resident

The Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages and International Relations at Pomona College, a liberal arts college of approximately 1500 undergraduates located 35 miles east of Los Angeles, invites applications for a position as Japanese Language Resident for the 2010-11 academic year.

DUTIES: • To serve as facilitator in intermediate and advanced Japanese conversation classes. • To assist with teaching of the elementary Japanese course. • To attend weekday Japanese lunch tables. • To organize and provide leadership for Center cultural activities, such as film screenings, guest presentations, and trips to appropriate local or regional events. • To live in the Japanese-language undergraduate residence hall (Language Residents are provided special rooms with private bath and kitchen).

VISA REQUIREMENTS: Language Residents hold J-1 non-degree student visas. In order to maintain good standing as defined by visa regulations, each term they must complete three courses (one of which will be a teaching practicum). In addition, visa regulations limit Language Residents to work no more than 20 hours per week.

COMPENSATION: $11,000 for the academic year, room and board, and subsidized health care plan. Also, tuition is waived for course loads of up to three credits. All contracts are for one academic year; upon review, contracts may be renewed for a single additional year.

QUALIFICATIONS: (1) Native speaker of Japanese; (2) At least twenty-one years of age; (3) B.A. degree (or equivalent), preferably in foreign languages, linguistics, or a related field: (4) TOEFL score of 600 on the paper-based test, 250 on the computer-based version, or 100 on the Internet-based version. Oldenborg may waive this TOEFL requirement if applicants demonstrate they have completed a significant amount of university coursework in English.

Japanese Teaching Specialists/Lecturers

The Department of Asian Languages and Literatures in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Minnesota seeks a pool of applicants to teach language courses in Japanese. Positions will be full-time appointments for the fall 2010 semester (08/30/10 - 01/12/11) and spring 2011 semester (01/13/11 - 05/29/11). If filled, these positions are for day, evening, or a combination of day/evening courses, taught on a semester basis. Full time appointments are eligible for benefits. Salary range is competitive based upon qualifications. Positions may be renewable annually depending on departmental need, funding and performance.
